How to wash compression stockings?

4 simple steps to wash:

  1. Fill the bucket with warm water. Add mild detergent (preferably liquid) and disturb the water with your hands to be sure that the detergent has been spread evenly.
  2. Soak the compression stockings into the bucket of warm water. When in water slightly rub the stockings against your palm and fingers. (very similar to washing a hand kerchief). Do not be very aggressive as the fibres may get damaged.
  3. Once you have done step 2 properly. Remove the soap filled water and add a fresh batch of warm water. Rinse the compression stockings gently and remove any excess soap.
  4. After properly rinsing your socks, remove them and gently squeeze them to remove excess water. Leave them on a flat surface or hang them on a hanger to dry.

What you shouldn’t do while washing:

  1. Do not stretch your compression stockings in any way, as you may deform its length making it too loose or too tight.
  2. Do not twist your compression stockings while rinsing as the elastic might get damaged and loose its compression
  3. Do not machine wash it.

Does it look too long a process? No it isn’t. this will take you just a few minutes.

The process of washing compression stockings remains same for medical compression stockings as well as the support range which includes travel socks, maternity support socks etc.

Hang on, I have some additional tips to extend the life of your stockings.

Tips:

  1. Do not use fabric softeners as they damage the fibres if used regularly.
  2. Do not use cold water or hot water. Warm water works best. Wondering why? Cold water doesn’t remove the dirt completely and hot water will damage the fabric.
  3. Do not use clips to hang the stockings.
  4. Indoor drying works better than direct sunlight.
