How does compression stockings help in varicose veins?

Before explaining how does compression stockings help in varicose veins, let us go back to understanding of what are varicose veins and compression stockings.

Varicose veins are conditions of venous insufficiency which are visible in the form of the blue-green swollen or knotted veins found at the calf area of the leg.

Venous insufficiency is a condition that occurs when the venous valves are not efficient in the leg veins to return blood back to heart.

Compression stockings use graduated compression therapy wherein the maximum pressure is exerted at the ankle which decreases towards the calf.

Therefore, the graduated compression stockings helps the flow of blood back to the heart relieving tired or/and aching legs and other conditions of venous insufficiency like spider veins , varicose veins etc.

There is a very common myth attached to this concept, that wearing compression stockings reduces and cures varicose veins. Yes, it is a myth and is not true. Let us scientifically understand this.

Varicose veins are a result of venous insufficiency. The calf values tend to bend and there is bi-directional flow of blood. Wearing graduated compression stockings help in the return of blood to the heart and not straighten or improve the calf muscle.

Therefore, we need to understand that graduated compression stockings helps to prevent further destruction of the valves thereby reducing the chance of chronic varicosities.

Compression stockings are available different grades and depending on the severity of the problem.

In case you have any of the symptoms of varicose veins or can visually see blue-green veins, it is always advisable to consult your physician for the presence of varicose veins.
