Preventing Varicose Veins: Tips and Lifestyle Changes

If you know someone who has suffered or is currently having varicose veins, then you know how troublesome the issue is. They can cause a lot of pain, which can affect your daily routine.Varicose veins are veins that get swollen or twisted and become visible under the surface of the skin. They mostly occur in legs and feet, but they may take place in other parts of your body too. Varicose veins take place when the one- way valves present in the veins get damaged or weakened. It affects the veins that help the blood flow back to the heart.

There are many tips that you can use and lifestyle changes you can follow to prevent varicose veins such as:

Reduce Weight

You may be at risk of developing varicose veins if you are overweight, as the extra weight may put more pressure on the veins in these conditions. That is why you need to create a healthy diet and eat nutritious food while ensuring to avoid junk food as much as possible. Developing these healthy habits will help reduce your weight or keep your weight in control.

Be Active

It is important to stay active and do exercises as it helps you lose weight and it strengthens the veins in your body. Keep your legs elevated as it helps to move the blood up from your legs, preventing it from pooling in the legs. This improves the flow of blood in your body. Make time every day to do this for a minimum of 15 minutes. Play any sport that you like as that will help you stay active too.

Avoid wearing tight clothes

Tight clothes can restrict the blood flow in your body and put more pressure on your veins, which can worsen the varicose veins. Which is why you need to wear loose-fitting clothes. You can wear compression socks or support stockings for varicose veins to help in reducing the swelling and pain in your legs.

There are also varicose vein socks you can wear which can prevent varicose veins from developing. These compression stockings prevent blood from pooling in the legs. Ask a doctor if wearing them will be right for you and how to wear them properly.

More Breaks and Check- ups

If you are travelling for long hours on the bus, trains or planes, keep taking breaks in between to relax. If you have a job in which you have to stand or sit for too long, then that could cause varicose veins too as it affects the blood circulation. Take a 5 - 10 minutes break in between while working to walk and stretch or relax.

High Blood pressure can also lead to varicose veins, which is why you need to keep getting it checked. Keep visiting the doctor and ask him/her about ways to keep your blood pressure in control.

Drink More Water

Drinking water helps to keep the blood flowing well and provides good health for your veins. Aim at the target of drinking at least 8-9 glasses of water in your daily routine. Not drinking enough water may be bad for your health as it causes many issues.

No Smoking

Smoking causes damage to your veins too, which may increase the risk of you developing varicose veins. Which is why you need to stop smoking if you are doing so and stay away from people who smoke too, as passive smoking is hazardous as well. Ask your doctor about how to quit smoking, for which he will give you strategies. It might take some time to get rid of this bad habit, but when you get rid of it, you will notice the improvement in your health.

Varicose Veins can be a worrisome issue, which is why you must try your best to prevent them from occurring in your body. Avoid tight-fitting clothes and wear compression socks for varicose veins and to help improve the health of your legs. Frequently visit a doctor to get your blood pressure checked and keep taking breaks while working or travelling. These are the tips and lifestyle changes you can include in your daily routine to avoid getting varicose veins. Hope these tips and lifestyle changes help you in staying healthy and keep you away from varicose veins.
